Medical billing involves submitting a bill from the healthcare provider to the relevant company who insures the client. Then the insurance company remits payment to the healthcare provider. Currently this process is done mostly using electronic submission but used to be done on paper and still occasionally is, and even electronic submissions can involve paper during some stages.
The medical billing process is not always done in one simple stage. If the insurance company refuses to accept the bill submission as it is, adjustment and re-submission might be necessary, sometimes more than once. Some insurance companies still process claims manually, which results in delays of several weeks and is a significant problem for the healthcare companies.
The employee doing the medical billing needs to be familiar with the legal and administrative details of all different types of medical insurance. Some insurance companies have fifteen or so different types of coverage. The legal matters relevant to the process are complex, and medical billing schools provide training in all these matters.
Medical coding produces standard medical codes which correspond to the particular procedures and level of healthcare given to each patient. The details of the data include the patient history, the extent and results of the examination of the patient, and the complexity of the medical decisions made on that case.
Medical coding is sometimes known as medical classification and involves translating medical diagnoses and procedures into standard medical codes. The relevant data includes X-ray analysis, laboratory results, doctor notes and examination results, and are used by insurance companies as well as government health organizations. These codes are in a state of continual development as new medical knowledge is arrived at. The classes in medical coding train the students in these codes, and how to use them.
The areas of medical coding and medical billing overlap in some ways, so students are often trained in both.
The career of medical coding and billing is a great choice currently because the “baby-boomer” generation is now starting to reach retirement age which results in an increased need for healthcare. Medical billing and coding schools train their students for this career, with relevant knowledge and ability.
